Intellicast S5E25 – Connecting Ecology and Market Research with Erin Sowell of Thoughtful Research

Welcome back to Intellicast! On today’s episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian are joined by Erin Sowell, the founder of Thoughtful Research.

Kicking off the episode, Brian Lamar and Producer Brian spend some time talking about the packed conference schedule coming up in the fall. They also notice how often they’ll be in Chicago over the next month.

Next, the guys talk about the recently released Insights Association Top 50 Market Research report.  They discuss the key findings of the report, including that the insights and analytics industry grew by nearly 17% year-over-year. They also mention that EMI made the list of the Top 30 Market Research Agencies as well!

[21:29] In the second half of the episode, we are joined by Erin Sowell, Founder of Thoughtful Research, to discuss how she is connecting ecology and market research together in a unique way.  Erin was one of the presenters at the Future of Insights Summit at UGA a couple of weeks ago with Brian Lamar, so they touch on the impressions of the conference. 

We start off the interview with Erin giving us some of her background and what led her to market research, starting with going to college to be an astronaut (no joke!).  She then talks about how after she got her degree in ecology, she kind of fell into market research. 

We then talk about her idea for Thoughtful Research, and how it is positioned to connect ecology to research. She gives us some insights on how she was starting to connect the dots a few years back, and that laid the groundwork for her work today.

Erin then gives us some additional details about the presentation she gave at UGA and some of the feedback she has received.

In the last part of the interview, we learn about one of Erin’s passions, skateboarding.  She talks about how she teaches skateboarding now, and how it is analogous to starting a business.
