In today's digital age, AI familiarity has become increasingly pervasive, influencing everything from daily routines to industry landscapes, but just how familiar are Americans with the top AI platforms?
General
When it comes to familiarity with generative AI platforms, ChatGPT leads significantly, with 23% of respondents indicating they are familiar with it. (“Familiar” is defined in this as selecting a top 2 box on a 1-5 scale of familiarity.) Copilot and Gemini follow, each with 12%. The remaining platforms—Grok, Claude, Duet, and Perplexity—are much less familiar to respondents, each garnering only 6-7% familiarity.
Regional
The regional breakdown indicates varying levels of familiarity with generative AI platforms across different parts of the country. ChatGPT is most familiar to respondents in the West, with 27% indicating familiarity, followed by the Northeast and South at 23%, and the Midwest at 20%. For Copilot, the West again leads with 14% familiarity, compared to 12% in the Northeast, and 11% in both the Midwest and South. Familiarity with Gemini is highest in the South at 13%, with the Northeast and West both at 12%, and the Midwest at 10%. These findings show that the West has the highest overall familiarity with these AI platforms, particularly with ChatGPT and Copilot.
Age
The age breakdown reveals significant differences in familiarity with generative AI platforms. Younger age groups are more familiar with ChatGPT, with 37% of 18-24-year-olds and 34% of 25-34-year-olds indicating familiarity, compared to only 5% of those 65 and older. Similarly, familiarity with Copilot is highest among 25-34-year-olds at 19%, followed by 18-24-year-olds at 17%, and drops to 2% in the 65+ group. Gemini shows a similar trend, with 21% familiarity in the 25-34 age group and 14% in the 18-24 age group, declining sharply to 1% among those 65 and older. This data highlights a clear age-related gap in familiarity with AI platforms, with younger individuals being much more familiar with these technologies than older adults.
Income
The income breakdown highlights varying familiarity with generative AI platforms across different income levels. ChatGPT familiarity increases with higher income, from 19% among those earning under $20,000 to 32% among those earning $100,000 or more. Copilot follows a similar trend, with 11% familiarity in the lowest income group, rising to 16% in the highest. Gemini familiarity is also higher among those with higher incomes, with 12% in the under $20,000 group and 14% in the $60,000-$99,999 and $100,000+ groups. This data indicates that higher income individuals tend to be more familiar with these AI platforms.
Ethnicity
The ethnicity breakdown reveals notable differences in familiarity with generative AI platforms among various groups. ChatGPT is most familiar among Asians or South Asians at 39%, followed by African-Americans at 35% and Hispanic/Latinos at 34%. Caucasians and those in the "Other" category both show 19% familiarity. For Copilot, African-Americans lead with 21% familiarity, followed by Hispanic/Latinos at 18% and Asians or South Asians at 16%. Caucasians show the least familiarity with Copilot at 10%.
Gemini is most familiar to African-Americans at 23%, with Hispanic/Latinos at 16% and Asians or South Asians at 12%. Caucasians again show the lowest familiarity at 10%. This data highlights that African-Americans and Asians or South Asians, are generally more familiar with these AI platforms compared to other ethnicities.
Panels
The panel breakdown highlights varying levels of familiarity with generative AI platforms. Panel G has the highest familiarity with ChatGPT at 31%, followed by Panel N at 25%, and Panels J and E at 23% and 22%, respectively. Panel L shows the lowest familiarity with ChatGPT at 16%. For Copilot, Panel G again leads with 19% familiarity, while Panel L has the lowest at 6%. Familiarity with Gemini is also highest in Panel G at 18%, and lowest in Panel L at 8%.
The most significant difference is seen with ChatGPT familiarity between Panel G (31%) and Panel L (16%), a 15-point gap. This data suggests that Panel G is consistently more familiar with these AI platforms compared to other panels, especially Panel L, which shows the lowest familiarity across all platforms.
