Let’s Work this Out: Exercise Levels by Demographic

May is Global Employee Health and Fitness Month! In conjunction, we thought it would be the perfect time to share the latest findings from our research-on-research regarding fitness.

The CDC recommends that adults get 150 minutes of exercise a week, whether it’s 30 minutes 5 days a week or 50 minutes 3 days a week. According to the HHS (Health & Human Services), 51.6% of adults exercise 3 or more days per week for at least 30 minutes. In this blog, we look at whether respondents have exercised at least 30 minutes 3 or more times in the past week.

Gender

First, let’s take a look at exercise levels by gender. Male respondents were 10% more likely to have exercised at least 30 minutes 3 or more times in the past week than females.

Age

When it comes to age, respondents age 18-44 were 10% more likely than respondents age 45+ to have exercised 3 or more times for at least 30 minutes in the past week.

Ethnicity

When looking at the data by ethnicity, Asian/Pacific Islanders are most likely to have exercised at least 30 minutes 3 or more times in the past week. Respondents who identify as American Indian/Alaskan Native or “prefer not to answer” are least likely to have exercised at least 30 minutes 3 or more times in the past week.

Income

There is a general trend by income where those with higher incomes are more likely to have exercised at least 30 minutes 3 or more times in the past week than those with lower incomes.

Panel

Finally, we see that there are differences in exercise levels by panel, with up to a 10% difference between panels as seen between Panel H and Panel O.

We’re also doing a fitness challenge of our own to bring Global Employee Health and Fitness Month to EMI! We’ll be competing to see which EMI team member can get the most steps this month! Stay tuned for updates on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn!
