Employee Spotlight: Emma Nicolls

At EMI, our team is one of our strongest assets– and it’s growing! In the past year, we’ve had a lot of new additions to our team and we want to highlight them and some of the unique strengths they bring to EMI. This week, we’re highlighting Marketing Specialist, Emma Nicolls. Continue reading to learn more about Emma!

What do you do at EMI?

I’m a Marketing Specialist so I work closely with our Marketing Director to execute the day-to-day aspects of our marketing activities!

What led you to EMI?

I started as a Marketing Intern in 2019 and was offered a full-time position after my graduation from the University of Cincinnati this spring!

When you aren’t at work, you are…?

When I’m not at work I’m usually hanging out with my friends and family, annoying my dog, or reading a good book.

What’s your favorite food?

This is going to sound boring, but I love Jimmy Johns. #4 Turkey Tom with cucumbers and provolone cheese please!

What’s your best travel story?

This isn’t exactly a happy travel story, but it’s definitely an interesting one! The summer I started interning at EMI, I went to California with a friend. On the second day, I got incredibly sick. (I’ll spare you the details, LOL.) My friend and I had planned to take a train across the country back to Cincinnati, but on the second day of our train ride, he got the same sickness! It was miserable. We woke up the morning of our third day on the train only to find out that it had broken down and completely stopped overnight. We had been on the train for 52 hours straight and were still in Nebraska! We got off the train in Omaha, took an Uber to the airport, and booked the next flight home.

What kind of music do you listen to?

As cliché as it sounds, I listen to almost everything! Country music definitely has a special place in my heart though.

If you could learn to do anything, what would it be?

Another cliché answer, but I wish I could sing! I was a theatre kid in high school (and briefly in college.) I can cry on command but cannot carry a tune!

If you could have dinner with any person, living, dead, or fictional, who would you dine with?

When I was watching Game of Thrones, I always wanted to meet Tyrion Lannister! I think he would be an interesting dinner guest.

Do you have a favorite movie/tv quote?

“I’m not convinced I know how to read. I’ve just memorized a lot of words.” –Nick Miller, New Girl

Tell me one interesting fact about yourself

My dog was supposed to be a seeing eye dog! She failed out of the program because she couldn’t cross the street without getting distracted, but now she lives with me!

What would you do for a career if you weren’t doing this?

I would probably be a journalist or work in publishing– anything involving writing!

Do you have a personal motto or mantra?

My mom always says, “What you think about, you bring about!” I’m a chronic overthinker so it’s a good reminder to dwell on the good things rather than constantly imagining the worst-case scenario. I don’t know if I believe that thinking about the negative can actually make it happen, but I do know we tend to notice more negative things if that’s what we’re thinking about!

What is your favorite thing about working at EMI?

I have the same answer as everyone else! I love the people. Working at EMI is so wonderful because of the supportive team we have and the awesome company culture we have cultivated. I always look forward to coming into the office because I never know what my crazy coworkers will be up to! I also really enjoy the work I do. Even as an intern, I was able to try so many different things and be a part of so many projects. It challenges me and keeps work interesting!

Which of our four core values here at EMI (Agility, Accountability, Integrity, or Passion) do you most relate to?

I’m going to say Accountability. It’s really important to me that I meet deadlines and do what I say I’m going to do. I want to be someone that my team members can depend on and know will always have their backs.
